What’s Curvature of the Penis: Understanding Peyronies
It goes by many names and the most common of them are a curved penis, penile curvature and bent penis. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter how it’s called.
Curved penis is a rather common condition among men of a different age that can cause lots of problems and can prevent a man from having a normal sexual life and perform well in the bed. Fortunately, in this post you will learn how to uncurve your penis.
Statistics shows that about 5% of males suffer from serious penile curvature, and the number makes it common case among men from all over the world. “Bend” is used and perceived similarly to “curve”, however a “bend” is the term which is used for a more serious penile curvature usually. A bend usually involves scar tissue (known as Peyronie’s Disease is also a common case). Anyway, in most cases curvature has no scar tissue.
What is a Curvature of the penis?
Curvature of the penis is a divergent contortion in the penile tissue that in most cases occurs during the process of erection.

How can I know that I have a curved penis? What are the symptoms?
- Penis is bent during erection
- Pinch of the penis during erection
- Painful process of erection
- Feeling discomfort or pain having sex
What causes a curved penis?
Here is the list of the most common factors that are possible reasons for causing curvature of the penis in the majority of the cases.
1 – Congenital curvature (innate cause)
Congenital curvature comes from birth; also symptoms can occur in the first three or four weeks. However in most cases the deformation corrects by itself and it doesn’t require any special treatment but sometimes the disorder remains and the penile curvature gets more strongly pronounced, more noticeable when an individual reaches the age of 13-14 years. This is because the penis starts to grow way faster in the period of puberty due to the secretion of testosterone, male sex hormones that play a crucial role in most processes of men establishment. In the majority of cases the curve is not critical and it is more about aesthetics but for some men it can really affect their normal sexual life, making sex painful, difficult or it can even be impossible.
2 – Injuries or trauma
A lot of men, who avoided congenital cause of the curvature, can develop one later in everyday life by a reason of injury inflicted on the penis. It is obvious that the penis has no bones inside it and consequently how can it be a cause? The thing is that such traumata can cause damage which is permanent. Accidents that may happen during sexual intercourse can cause raptures in the penile tissues. These raptures cause consolidations in the tissue and it what stunts growth. It means that when penis is hurt in such way one side of the penis keeps growing while the growth of another one is stopped and finally one side outgrows the other and the penis looks curved.
3 – Tight underwear
This is a theory which wasn’t proved clinically however it can be real. When men who put on very tight underwear or pants get their penises erected, the penile tissue becomes rather restricted and immobilized. What is more, a lot of men curve their intimate organ to the side in order to hide the embarrassing erection. This affects the process of erection because blood flows better through one side of the penile vessels and the other side gets less amount of blood stripping it of oxygen and other important nutrients.
4 – Sleeping on your stomach
This one was not clinically proved also, however some reproductive experts and sexologist do ask males to abstain from sleeping on stomach especially during puberty. The hypothesis is that sleeping on stomach has an effect of compression on the penile blood vessels and it causes a reduced blood flow to the spongy tissues of the penis. And consequences are rather similar to results of wearing very tight underwear.
Peyronie’s disease is the most dangerous and common case for the curvature at the same time. Peyronie?s is a degenerative disease, in case if an individual leaves it untreated then it will continue to get even worse. Finally Peyronie’s disease can make sexual intercourse very painful and in some cases even impossible because the penis is curved that much.
6 – Other causes: The mentioned is not all the possible reasons. Some other medical disorders may result in penile curvature.
Here are some of them:
Dupuytren’s contracture: This is a rope-like thickening across the palm of one or both hands. This issue usually affects white men whose age is over 50. Nertheless, therea er not that many people with Dupuytren’s contracture develop curvature of the penis.
Urethral stricture: This is an obstruction of urethera which is the tube that carries semen and urine.
Hypospadias: Another genetically caused penile abnormality.
How the penis curve develops?
Naturally the penis curvature develops when one of two chambers (Corpora Cavernosa) develops faster than the other one. In the beginning it may be unnoticeable but in years it becomes more and more noticeable. The penis curves towards the side which develops slower. There is no way to predict and prevent such natural curvature however effective and reliable treatment does exist.
Possible directions of penis curve
This is a common case when penis bends upward but it also could be bent to the left or right side. It is rare however also possible to have completely erected penis which still points straight downward. This usually happens when the penis is injured at the base. The curvature is rather noticeable and it can make sexual intercourse difficult and painful. The penile curvature may take on an hourglass shape. In that case it looks like the penis is clamped in the center. Anyway, a penis curve to the left side is the most common one.
Why the penis curves on erection?
In most cases the penis only takes its curve while erection occurs.
The reasons are:
- The location which causes the curve actually has less skin than the rest of the penis
- Scar tissue on the penile skin. It cannot stretch well enough as normal skin does
- Part of the skin on the other side of the curve has been stretched out (from very tight clothing, pulling or constant positioning)
What are possible complications of penis curvature?
If the disorder left untreated then it finally may result in painful sexual intercourse, inability to have sex and impotence as well.
How to fix curved penis?
If you find your erection and intercourse to be painful, if you have some problems with the process of erection or the penis doesn’t look like it should then you better to deal with it as soon as you noticed it. The most effective and reliable treatments for such issue are cream which contains verapamil (helps to “heal” the scar tissue), stretching the damaged side of the penis so this side matches the other and the last and the most radical cure is a surgery, however any kind of surgery is dangerous so consider it only if all the other don’t work.
To sum up, curvature of the penis is a common case and you should not be afraid of it and ignore it! The worst thing you can do in this case is to leave it on its own. Be sure, if you have it but don’t treat it then it will get worse! It is not such a big deal; there are ways to take care of it. So do not hesitate and act before it become too late!
